This project, led by the University of Melbourne in partnership with the largest plastic recycler in Australia, Advanced Circular Polymers, is focused on finding solutions for the mixed and low-value plastic waste that remains after sorting. It is part of a broader research theme exploring advanced chemical recycling and upcycling methods. The team is trialling the development of a chemical recycling process and improved material mixes to convert these residual plastics—normally sent to landfill—into durable recycled building materials. The goal is to find ways to utilise up to 30% of plastic waste that currently goes unrecovered in traditional recycling systems.
